Custom Programming and Database Work
With over 20 years of experience in software architect & development, business process reengineering,
web technologies, databases, and project management, we can provide a broad range of technical and business skills
to help our clients.
We work well with people to understand their needs and requirements, provide technical options/insight, and develop
beneficial solutions to their problems. This is demonstrated by the many long-term relationships and repeat business from
the clients whose projects we have worked on. Clients include:
- National Cancer Institute
- National Heart Lung and Blood Institute
- The White House Commission of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy
- Worldwide Assurance for Employees of Public Agencies
- The University of Maryland
Covered Bridge Software uses it's technical knowledge and business skills to
help clients explore new technology options, make informed decisions, and develop
innovative solutions for their problems.
Below is a sampling of our custom web based applications, software programs, and projects, followed by more information on our technical skills:

Committee Document Review System (CDRS) - National Heart Lung & Blood Institute
The Committee Document Review System (CDRS) is a web based application designed to assist committees and expert panel members and
other groups in the preparation of large medical documents requiring collaboration among the members.
The system is web-based and allows
people from different locations to work together on large complex documents. It provides the tools and functionality to:
- Merge and edit multiple documents into one
- Selectively accept, reject, or defer changes made by individual writers/reviewers
- Backup and keep track of different versions of a document
- Support committee member collaboration and communication
Each committee or expert panel will have a customized web interface. The web page will include the name of the group, the
document, and the individual chapters or sections.
Next to each chapter or section are "Upload" and "Download" buttons.
Committee members simply go to the web page and select the "Download" button for the section they want to review. When
they complete their review, they simply return to the web page and click the "Upload" to return the file with their review
comments.
Committee staff merges the comments and work with the committee or section chair to accept, reject, or defer the
changes.
Covered Bridge Software was the architect and developer on this Collaborative Authoring, Document
Management system for the National Institutes of Health, Heart Lung and Blood Institute. This project utilizes a
SQL Server database, Active Server Pages, Java Applets, JavaScript, dynamic HTML, and customized/tailored version
of MS Word.

Mainframe-to-Web Application - University of Maryland, Service Center
I was the Team Leader in the development of a Legacy-to-Web application involving "screen scraping" data from the Legacy
(mainframe) system (interactive COBOL in a DEC VMS environment), manipulating and combining data, and loading it into a
relational database.
We then used various web technologies to pull this data from the database and provide an easy to use
"front end" web application viewable from an internet browser. This allowed Frostburg State University and several other
University of Maryland institutions to offer online student registration over the Web, leveraging the significant
investment of their existing legacy applications.

Intranet Web-based HR Timesheet Application - University of Maryland, Service Center
This was a project to develop a web-based employee timesheet application. Using username and password login, and encrypting all data send
back and forth from the server, an employee could access this application from anywhere to update their timesheet.
The benefits of this
application were: automation of a paper-based process into an electronic process, easy of use, field checking and validation, required fields checking,
automatic calculation of total and leave fields, pick-lists with appropriate items (for example all the different types of leave codes),
a central location where information was stored, and administrative access and management.

Correspondence Tracking System - Food and Drug Administration, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER)
Developed a PC based computerized tracking system in dBase III+, allowing Food and Drug Administration technicians to log &
help keep track of mail correspondence from the public to the Food and Drug Administration, Center for Drug Evaluation and
Research department.
This database driven system replaced their existing manual paper-based method and was in production
use for more than six years. This system included reporting functions, administrative and maintenance functions, and
search capability.

Consultant / PC Software Specialist - Micro Computer Business Solutions, Inc.
This CPA firm specialized in electronic accounting solutions and frequently dealt with clients with emergency or
problem-solving issues.
For example a client had an electronic accounting system made by manufacture X, and manufacture X
is not in business any more and there is a problem with the software. Or a client needs to get their data from an old
proprietary accounting system into a newer "standards based" system, and there is no easy way to extract the old data and
get it into the new system. Or a company is bought out by another company and they are trying to get in-compatible
computer systems to talk to one another.
I was the software/programmer specialist brought in to handle these types of
difficult problems. Some of the projects I worked on include:
- Database Conversion Program
I wrote a database conversion program (C and COBOL) that retrieved and parsed data from a proprietary client database into
a standard (dBase III) database. This allowed the client's data to be incorporated into a modern accounting software package.
- Data Recovery and Retrieval Program
I wrote data recovery and retrieval programs to salvage client records & accounting data from a "crashed" proprietary
accounting system.
- Custom Accounting Programs
I wrote custom accounting programs under the direction of the CPA to apply various accounting formulas to client data, and to
manipulate, parse data, combine data, etc. to meet the required accounting standards.
- Telephony Remote Data Collection System
I was the architect and developer of a PC based, voice controlled, phone-in remote data-collection system used by hundreds
of hospitals across the country. The client was a central hospital administration company (MNE Hospital Group).
Technologies used include
dBase III, COBOL, Watson communications software (I had to install the Watson telephony hardware in my computer); DOS batch
file and utility programs.
This system was developed to provide up-to-date information and centrally monitor and
administer hospital bed utilization and statistics in hospitals across the country. It allowed technicians from the
various hospitals in the United States to call in over the phones and update a central database.
The system provided
elaborate phone menus (I used and recorded my sister's voice for the numerous phone menu prompts), and entry of numeric
data via the phone's touch pad. I design the database and wrote the maintenance and reporting programs (dBase III) that
provided the client with the required accounting and administrative information from the database.

communication equipment, computer peripherals, networking, and computing infrastructure-supporting equipment.
Type of Projects:
Much of the work we do for clients involves systems analysis, systems design, process reengineering, and the back-end
processing of data. This includes working with mainframe systems, databases, application development, records storage
and retrieval systems, paper based processes, and the architect/design and building of systems that improve work processes
and work flow.
Frequently we work with the client's exiting computer programs and data infrastructure, and build on it using new technology
and methods (data mining, screen scraping, scanned documents, importing and exporting of data, data manipulation, etc) to
provide new ways of using and presenting their data.
The data delivery is frequently integrating with standard web
technologies to provide a familiar web browser interface to view the information; both for internal (secure & private)
purposes, and for outside (public) viewing.
Clients have expressed appreciation at our ability to develop innovative
solutions for their problems.
